Thompson Hall has been full of mystery ever since I first saw it’s dark brick walls and tall towers. For any of you who are familiar with the dark academia aesthetic (read more here), I felt this building had the broody, slightly spooky atmosphere I was looking for.

However, as watercolor paint tends to be very bright and airy by nature, it was a challenge to capture this essence. By muting colors, adding some perching black birds, and listening to the Wednesday TV series score while painting, I can feel this painting’s balance of fresh autumn and historic mystery that I am in love with! New England’s college campus’ in the fall are truly enchanting, and I feel so lucky I get to live and work around these beautiful places!
